The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services these tips to protect you and your family in the event of an earthquake:
If inside, get under a table or desk, or brace yourself in a doorway. Stay away from windows.
If in a high-rise building, move against an interior wall if you are not near a desk or table. Do not use elevators.
If outside, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and downed electrical wires.
If you are on a sidewalk near buildings, duck into a doorway to protect yourself from falling bricks, glass, plaster, and other debris.
If driving, pull over to the side of the road and stop. Avoid overpasses and power lines. Stay in your car until the earthquake stops.
If you are in a crowded store or other public place, move away from display shelves and don't rush for the exit.
