Guard Your Business Against Fire Hazards
As fires raged throughout the state of California this fall, business owners need to know how to guard their livelihoods from the destruction of this tragic catastrophe.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, some prevention measures business owners should take include:
Plan an escape route for you and your employees in the event of a fire.
Train employees in fire safety, particularly those responsible for storage areas, indoor and outdoor housekeeping, and maintenance, and operations where open flames or flammable substances are used.
Ban smoking or limit it to designated areas.
Modernize your electrical system – a large percentage of nonresidential fires are caused by faulty wiring.
Employers can learn to prevent small fires from becoming total destruction by:
Having the appropriate fire extinguishers on hand and in working order.
Locating their businesses in a fire-resistive building (a structure made of non-combustible materials with fire walls that create barriers to the spread of fire).
Having the fire alarm systems connected to the local fire department.
