Settling Claims After a Disaster
Natural disasters can occur without warning, leaving you to pick up the pieces of your destroyed business. Your last worry should be whether your new building meets state and local laws.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, some important tips to consider as the rebuilding process proceeds are:
Protect yourself from shoddy workmanship. Use only licensed, reputable contractors and be sure they have the proper building permits.
Beware of contractors who ask for a large amount of money up front as well as contractors whose bids are amazingly low -- they may cut corners and leave you with a construction problem after they're gone.
Contact your adjuster immediately if you have additional information on your claim or find damage you did not notice previously.
If you believe the settlement made by your insurance company is not a fair one, contact the company and present information to back up your case.
