Hotel Fires: Rare But Dangerous

Less than one percent of fire deaths occur at hotels, while 80 percent of fire deaths occur at home. But this does not stop vacationers from being concerned about hotel fire safety issues.

According to a National Fire Protection Association survey, Americans expressed the most concern about hotel fire safety, though they are actually among the rarest of places for a fire to happen.

If a fire breaks out in your hotel, follow these seven important tips:
  • If a fire starts in your room, get out and close the door behind you.

  • If you hear the fire alarm, evacuate, don't investigate.

  • Never use elevators.

  • Crawl low under smoke.

  • Read the fire safety information posted in your room and know your escape routes.

  • Test all doors before opening -- kneel and touch both the door and knob with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it cautiously.

  • If the door is hot, don't open it. Find another escape route or stay in your room, stuff cracks around the door with towels, and call the fire department to tell them you are trapped. Go to your balcony and signal for help.
