Steer Your Teens in the Right Direction:
Teach Safe Driving

As teens embark on a new freedom called a driver's license, you need to educate them on becoming safe drivers, because what they don't know may hurt them.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, most teen passenger deaths (67 percent) occur in crashes where another teen is driving. In fact, 20 percent of all passengers who die in crashes are killed when a teenager is driving.

If your teen is about to get his or her new license, consider the following suggestions when teaching the teen how to drive:
  • Remind teens that driving a car is not a right, it's a privilege.

  • Give teens plenty of supervised driving practice, even after they earn their licenses.

  • Suggest teens keep the radio off, or the volume low. The fewer distractions, the better.

  • Discourage the idea of using a cell phone while driving.

  • Be aware of the high risk of new drivers and their friends driving together.

  • Permit only supervised driving after dark.

  • Insist teens wear safety belts at all times, even when driving with their peers.

  • Realize that high school driver instruction classes are just the beginning of teens' driving education. Continual support and advice from licensed drivers in the family will improve your teen's chances of becoming a safe driver.
  • Remember that children often follow in their parents' footsteps. If you tell your teen to obey the speed limit, yet you depend on a radar detector, your teen will likely do the same the next time he or she is behind the wheel. Setting a good example now is important to your teen's future driving habits. Make sure you're not a lead foot, and abide by all traffic laws, especially when your teen is in the car.
