Glossary of Common Internet Terms

P
Partner Programs - This is a type of sponsorship
program used on certain sites. The program usually pays a percentage of
signup fees and continues to pay recurring charges for continuing members
at their sites. Others merely pay a set rate per signup.
PC - Personal Computer. Invented in 1975 and
popularized by companies such as Apple Computer and IBM, the personal
computer allowed people to have the power of a mainframe computer in a
more portable format.
PCS Phone - Personal Comunications Services Phone.
A mobile phone based on digital technology. PCS phones are considered to be
more secure than analog mobile phones (such as conventional cellular phones).
They also come with a number of additional capabilities such as caller ID,
call forwarding, paging, and voice mail.
PDF - Portable Document Format. A file format
that allows the creation of a single magazine-like document that can
contain multiple pages of text, graphics, forms, and other data.
PGP - Pretty Good Privacy. A protocol that
defines a standard to encrypt email messages, making them more secure.
Pic Post - Picture Post. A tool for attracting
traffic to a site. Webmasters submit image content for their sites to be
linked on a grouped page for the surfers to find.
Pixel - Picture Element. A little square that
can be seen when a graphics image is enlarged. The more pixels in an image,
the better its resolution. By dividing pixels into even smaller units,
researchers improved font display resolutions by as much as 300%.
PNG - Portable Network Graphics. A new bit-mapped
graphics format designed to replace GIF. The most recent versions of
Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer now support PNG.
POP - Post Office Protocol. The most popular
method for giving users access to their email.
Power Supply - An electrical device that
converts AC current from a wall outlet (120v) into DC current.
PPP - Point-to-Point Protocol. A method of
connecting to the internet, usually via slow-speed modems.
Proggie - Shortened slang for program
usually referring to a sponsor's partnership or clickthrough program for
webmasters.
