Glossary of Common Internet Terms

M
MIME - Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extensions.
The protocol under which complex messages, such as graphics and audio,
are sent and received via email.
Modem - MOdulator-DEModulator. Connects a
PC to a telephone line by converting the PC's digital message (pulses)
into audio frequencies (analog) for the telephone system, and reconverts
frequencies into digital messages at the receiving end.
Monitor - A device, similar to a TV screen,
that is used to present output from the PC.
Motherboard - The main circuit board in a
PC. Contains sockets that accept other boards. In addition, the motherboard
contains the bus, CPU, RAM chips, slots, battery slot, keyboard connector,
a co-processor socket, and other supporting chips.
Mouse - Device that allows software options
to be selected.
MOV - Movie. A QuickTime movie.
MPEG - Motion Picture Experts Group -
An audio/video file format used primarily for satellite, cable TV, and
DVD transmision of motion pictures. It offers excellent quality in
a relatively small file.
Multimedia - A combination of media types on
a single document, including text, graphics, animation, audio, and video.
