Glossary of Common Internet Terms

I
ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers. Created as a private sector not-for-profit internet
group to administer policy for the internet name and address system.
ICQ - This is an excellent program to help
people communicate in real time (live) on the net. It's also a very
efficient way of getting things done, especially for webmasters.
IETF - Internet Engineering Task Force. A
loosely self-organized group of people who make technical and other
contributions to the engineering and evolution of the internet and its
technologies.
IMAP - Internet Message Access Protocol. A
newer method for giving users access to their email.
Ink Jet Printer - A device that propels
droplets of ink directly onto other mediums such as paper. Today, almost
all ink jet printers produce color using the combination of cyan, magenta,
and yellow.
Internet - The worldwide network of computers
communicating via an agreed upon set of internet protocol.
InterNIC - Internet Network Information Center.
Before 1999, it provided internet directory and registration services.
IP - Internet Protocol. The underlying
technology that lets people communicate with one another on the internet.
Without IP, your email wouldn't know how to find you. Simply, the data is
split up into little pieces called packets. The packets are coded in a
special way so they know how to get together again at their destination.
If you sometimes get garbled email, it's because the packets got confused.
IP Address - Internet Protocol Address. This
is the numerical address for your actual website. It is translated from
your domain address; i.e. 255.12.34.567
IRC - Internet Relay Chat. This is another
excellent tool used by webmasters to communicate with each other. It's more
than just a chat program, and allows effective communication with people
in over 60 countries.
ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network.
This technology lets you turn a phone line into a digital network capable of
sending up to 128 kilobits per second. You can split the same ISDN line into
two channels (each 56 kilobits) and use one for data, the other for voice,
getting the equivalent of two phone lines.
ISP - Internet Service Provider. A host company
that provides internet services and resurces for individual and commercial
accounts. There are many ISPs from which to choose, and many variables
in the selection process.
