Glossary of Common Internet Terms

D
DHTML - Dynamic HTML. Relies on the document
object model to dynamically change the appearance of web pages after they
have been downloaded to a user's browser.
Directory - A website which features gathered
and categorized information about other websites on the net. It is similar
to a search engine in that it is a searchable database, but different in that
the information is gathered from data submitted to the directory by other
sites.
Display Adapter - Converts images created
in the PC to the electronic signals required by the monitor.
DNS - Domain Name Server. This server links a
domain name with its corresponding IP address to make it easier to find
websites on the internet.
DOM - Document Object Model. The specification
for how objects in a web page (text, images, headers, links, etc.) are
represented. The DOM defines what attributes are associated with each
object and how the objects and attributes can be manipulated.
Domain Name - This is the address which identifies
an internet site. Domain names consist of at least two parts -- the part on
the left is the name of the company, institution, or other organization, and
the part on the right identifies the highest subdomain. The subdomain can be
a country such as ca for Canada or fr for France, or it can
indicate the type of organization -- com for commercial, edu
for education, etc. The IP address is translated into the domain name by
the DNS.
Download - The process of copying data files
from a remote computer to a local computer.
DSL - Digital Subscriber Line - A technology that
allows voice, data, images, and video to travel at high speeds (up to 8.5 megabits
per second downstream) over common copper phone lines. If you're thinking of
installing DSL technology, you'll need to know the distance to the nearest
telephone central office. If you live more than 12,400 feet away, you're out of luck!
DVD - Digital Versatile Disc. A compact disc
format that can contain several gigabytes of information.
