Glossary of Common Internet Terms

C
CD-ROM - Compact Disk Read Only Memory. Often
referred to as CDs, these disks are capable of storing several hundred
megabytes of data such as text, graphics, and audio. A CD-ROM drive in
a PC can read both a CD-ROM disk and an audio CD disk.
CERN - European Center for Particle Research.
Developed a set of protocols for transferring hypertext via the internet
that we now call the world wide web.
CGI - Common Gateway Interface. A means for
a webserver to pass on information via an application program and to receive
data back. Some CGIs are remotely hosted on other servers, while others
may be used for low or no cost directly off your own server.
Chargeback - This occurs when a surfer cancels
his or her membership with a sponsor via a credit card company. Chargebacks
will result in cancellation of referral fees paid to the webmaster.
CIDR - Classless Inter-Domain Routing. Defines
the assignment of IP addresses.
Click-Through Sponsor - This type of sponsor
pays per click rather than per sign-up. Some sponsors have a set
conversion ratio while others simply pay per raw/unique click. If your
site uses click-through sponsors, be sure to read the rules regarding
payment per click as some sponsors pay more depending on conversions, total
hits sent in a given period, and other factors.
Content - Anything that is offered for viewing
by surfers at a site. It could be a free site or a membership site or a site
which provides e-commerce products.
Counter - A program which tallies the number
of hits to a site. The program can also be used to track a number of statistics
including raw vs. return hits, browsers used to view the site, country or
location of visitor to the site, and much more. Some counter programs
also count outgoing traffic to help track hits to partnership and other
sponsored programs.
Conversion Ratio - A conversion ratio is based
on how many sign-ups received out of the total number of clicks during a
specific time period. The result can affect the payout and is a great way
to evaluate the quality of traffic the site is sending or receiving.
CPU - Central Processing Unit. This is the
heart of the computer and is often referred to as the processor. It
consists of the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), which performs high-speed
calculations and comparisons, and the control unit, which searches,
examines, and executes each instruction in a software program.
CSS - Cascading Style Sheets. A method of
simplifying the code related to the display of web pages, used primarily
in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
CSU/DSU - Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit.
The CSU is a device that connects a terminal to a digital line. The DSU is
a device that performs protective and diagnostic functions for a
telecommunications line. Typically, the two devices are packaged as a
single unit. Such a device is required for both ends of a T-1 or T-3
connection.
CT - Computer Telephony - The convergence of
computers and telephones.
