API - Application Programming Interface. Defines how programmers use a particular computer feature.

ARPANET - Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Internet Program. The original name of the internet, as created by the United States Department of Defense.

ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It is the world standard for the 128 characters that computers use to display letters, numbers, and special characters in Western languages. Designed originally for newspaper teletype machines.

ASP - Application Service Provider. A company that creates a program that can be run via the internet. ASP also stands for Active Server Pages, a method of preprocessing a web page before it is displayed to the page visitor.

ATM - Asynchronous Transfer Mode. A very fast data transmission technology.

AU - Audio. The most common sound format on the web.

AVS - Adult Verification Service. An AVS sets up a password-protected entrance to an internet site. It is used to keep minors and those without credit cards out of an adult site. There is a fee for some adult verification services, but others are free once age is verified.
