Choices in Group Health Insurance
The Selection Process
Quality products and service is not an accident. Select your Broker
with the same care you use for your attorney, accountant, and other top
advisors. Interview the Broker and decide on the person/firm before
starting to gather "quotes."
Define your needs
Define your budget
Define your corporate position regarding employee benefits
Insurance shopping is not fun. Select a Broker who will stay on top
of the market for you and pay attention to your changing needs. A good
Broker earns your business, advises you, listens to you, and places
your insurance -- allowing you to focus on your product and profitablity.
Purpose
The purpose of employee benefits and group health insurance is to attract
the highest caliber of personnel by enhancing their personal well being.
A good employee benefit program spearheaded by group health insurance
allows the employee to focus on his/her work and avoids personal problems
entering the workplace. An HR person for a Fortune 500 firm once told
me: "We worry about the employee's financial well being so that when
the employee reports to work, we have his/her undivided attention on
corporate matters." Not a bad motto!
Coverage
Group health insurance has two basic forms. The HMO approach is
designed to control costs while providing quality care through a
"primary care physician." All treatment starts with the primary care
physician. All specialists must be authorized by the primary care
physician in order for the insurance plan to recognize and therefore
pay for the specialized procedure. The HMO plan is characterized by low
co-payments at the doctor's office and little or no co-payment when
hospitalized. Some of the more popular HMO plans now have a deductible
for hospital stays or certain outpatient procedures. Younger employees
and lower paid employees typically prefer the HMO plan over all other types
of coverage.
The other basic form of group health insurance is the PPO or Preferred Provider Organization. This
plan is characterized by the patient's ability to select any contracted physician, any time, any place.
You can choose to go to a certain cardiologist on Monday, a certain dermatologist
on Tuesday, a certain ear, nose and throat specialist on Wednesday, a certain
gynecologist on Thursday and a certain urologist on Friday. No problems with any of that scenario as long as the physicians are contracted with your provider.
Co-payments at the doctor's office are higher and hospital stays as well as
outpatient surgery, etc. cost more but the choice of physician and
treatment facility remains with the patient.
Frequent Travelers
Employees in Other States
Firms with frequent travelers, employees in
other states and employees who travel to foreign countries have special
needs that must be addressed. A frank discussion of all of your company's
operations should always be a part of the annual policy review.
